Los Angeles designerScott Shraderis known for ample but refined landscape that blend rude material in a range of subtle hues . At a place in Coronado , California , he combined a pallet of stone , metallic element , and woodwind instrument witholive treesandsucculentsto make garden spaces that flow seamlessly around a contemporaneous glass - and - stucco house . The house , design by Island Architects , is a stop from the beach and has flooring - to - ceiling methamphetamine windows and doorway that make it so transparent that “ the cable between indoors and out disappears , ” Shrader enounce . As a consequence , the gardens had to have-to doe with completely to the interiors , and palpate well-to-do while standing up to the strong , advanced building .
out-of-door area were limited . The two - story , 7,000 - square - foot home , finish up in 2013 , takes up much of its lot , with little setback from its neighbour or the street . But Shrader made the most of what he had , develop four distinct outdoor suite that live like airy extensions of the house . The harmony between the two began , he say , with an uncommonly close design collaboration . Before the firm was build , he met regularly with Island Architects , the decorators ( Jeffrey Alan Marks and Ross Cassidy ) , and the builders ( Smith Brothers Construction ) to talk over and organize construct , materials , and destination . All team members librate in on key decisions .
The owners , a couple with grown children , ab initio supplied some rudimentary guidelines but left much to the group . Recalls Shrader , “ They get laid our employment and trusted us to make a casual , approachable place where they could hang out with friends and loose . ”

Shrader , who has designed many seaboard gardens , preface several elements that helped tie the home to its landscape , peculiarly important for a see - through house that sit at garden level . The home ’s external stucco finale , for example , was hand blended with bits of oyster and other shell to give it the look of “ having uprise from the beach . ” alfresco , Del Rio gravel paths , which link up several of the spaces , were hand - seed , like the stucco , with beach shield . Shrader lay polished Dalle de France limestone around the common salt - body of water pool , a choice rectify enough for use as inside coldcock too . Unlike many other options , says Shrader , this endocarp “ can take changeless , splashing water , peculiarly salt water , which is more corrosive . ”
In demarcation to the clean , modernistic surface of the limestone , textured antique cobbles pave the home ’s arrival court and create connecting “ carpeting ” in other garden rooms . They scar a gathering spot around a stone tabular array outside the living room , and further on , a lounge centered on an outdoor fireplace . “ change surfaces underfoot signal that you ’re impart one outside way for another , ” says Shrader , “ just as they do indoors , when you go from a wood floor to a carpeting . ”
Similarly , switching up furnishing also shift the mood as you move among gardens . Between the house and consortium , he designed a custom-made - concrete banquette , complete with integrated side table , for informal drink and dining . For superfluous can , he added sleek yet rustic reclaimed - woods chairs by Brazilian couturier Carlos Motta . Beside the pool with its polished decking , he pair Motta ’s simple forest loungers with vintage , livid - glazed garden stools , a contrast of cast and surfaces that makes each element polish . Nearby , in the small assemblage spot outside the living room , he surrounded the stone table ( a weighty , eighteenth - century piece ) with Walter Lamb ’s airy 1950s tubular bronze chairs with cord seats . “ fuse vintage , modern , and antique find out in natural materials warms up a contemporaneous garden , ” notes Shrader .

He also believes that using neutral colors observe it subdued and unagitated , peculiarly in landscapes that are organized around unripened . Among his first planting tasks was to parry the front of the house from the road with a dense , envelop waxleaf privet screen . From there , in the garden overall , different foliages , not blooms , were his focus . His poor plant listing includes silverish olive trees ; modeled , sedimentary - toned century plant ; and boxwood sheared into globes . “ This is a timeless combination that ’s been used for C , ” he explains . “ It look like it could have been done century of age ago or yesterday . ” The colour and texture are fully at rest home in California ’s Mediterranean climate , particularly along the coast . Here , with the glassful doors open , reflected sunlight shimmers in through the olive trees and their rustle farewell link the speech sound of wave on the beach .
