Greenhouse growers expect that extreme weather will have damaging consequence . They have been acting on these expectations , and will continue to do so . Most of the experienced consequences of extreme conditions are indirect . It negatively affects water provision , as well as crop quality and yield due to drouth and pest damage . consort to the report ' Klimaatadaptatie in de land- en tuinbouw ' ( Climate adaptation in Agriculture Department and horticulture ) by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture , Fisheries , Food Security and Nature , greenhouse grower often believe that they already know what to do . According to this report , Greenhouse cultivator have a negative posture towards the future . Seven in ten horticulture enterpriser increasingly experience extreme weather in the Netherlands . Over a third , horticulture enterpriser also experience negatively charged consequences of extreme weather . For instance , fiscal consequences , and consequences for their work methods . More than half ( 57 % ) expect ( more ) electronegative consequences for their stage business in the future . Greenhouse agriculturist are progressive with climate - adaptive measuresTwo in five ( 44 % ) greenhouse growers find that there are more disadvantages than advantages of increasing extreme conditions and/or salinization . therefore , the absolute majority of glasshouse growers ( about 70 % ) have already taken clime - adaptive cadence ; 52 % of them did so in the retiring five years , the others did so longer ago . Another half ( 49 % ) of them design to take ( more ) measures in the next five years .
glasshouse agriculturist experience the collateral consequences of uttermost weatherInterviews with greenhouse growers show that they feel utmost weather differently than other groups of growers . Namely , their craw do not suffer directly from the effects of utmost weather condition . They are not immediately expose to drouth or , on the contrary , quaggy land . However , there are collateral result .
When greenhouse growers who primarily see disadvantages are necessitate what disadvantages they see , the most common one are a lowly quality of their harvestable product ( 36 % ) , and less craw proceeds due to drought ( 28 % ) and pest harm ( 30 % ) . From the audience , they also come along to increasingly perceive body of water supplying as a challenge due to soil evaporation and regularization regarding drainage and sprinkling . In improver , the heat also fetch several disadvantage : supererogatory monetary value because it takes a good deal of push to keep greenhouses at the right temperature , but also heat tenseness to crops that are damage as a result . Greenhouse growers take other measuresStrategies that focus on water ( storing water underground and above ground - 41 % ; reducing water ingestion - 29 % ) and crop protection ( reducing susceptibility to pests - 38 % ; protect vulnerable crops - 21 % ) are particularly useful for nursery grower . Although these are also strategies that are utile for enterpriser in open cultivation , glasshouse agriculturalist ( are forced to ) take very different measures .
The Brobdingnagian absolute majority of the measures presented testify not to be applicable to greenhouse agriculturalist . When it comes to the applicable measures ( such as integrate harvest protection and the use of water basins ) , their costs run to be an obstacle . glasshouse growers think it is too expensive ( 37 % ) or that it costs more than it yields ( 24 % ) .
Greenhouse cultivator rely in the main on their own power and those of colleaguesHalf of nursery horticulturists trust their own power to manage with the consequences of uttermost weather condition conditions and/or salinization . They say they know enough , and that they know what to do . Moreover , the glasshouse cultivator also appear to trust their workfellow . They use their own electronic connection or trust on deal journals to get information .
The government activity plays a modified role in this . Greenhouse grower seldomly ( 2 % ) attend information confluence , training row or webinars from the central government . It ’s still unclear whether this is due to a lack of supplying , or that the existing supply does not sufficiently meet the needs of greenhouse grower .
For this qualitative study , two front - offset in the horticulture sector were interviewed .
