Early June.

‘ What is one to say about June , the clock time of perfect young summer , the fulfilment of the promise of the earlier months and with as yet no sign of the zodiac to cue one that its fresh young sweetheart will ever fade ’ . Gertrude Jekyll .

Well yes , Gertrude , I jibe , just so . But one could say that it is the crowning consequence of the whole class . April and May are exciting and we enjoy a constant captivated astonishment at the wearable of the whole landscape in tender William Green . But June is the instant of beau ideal . It is a month when even work-shy people like me get up early so as not to miss a single glorious minute . The early mornings are wonderful but so are the evenings and the bits in between . How can we gestate to go in and overleap a single second of it ? Today we have some welcome rain ; lovely , gentle , summer rainfall and so it is a chance to catch up here . In June , every mean solar day brings new blooms and delights and I find it difficult to find the metre to come in and write about them . Here are a few of the early June efflorescence that keep me out in the garden .

One of the most challenging things about gardening , unless you have somewhere like Sissinghurst or Great Dixter , is to have the whole garden looking wonderful all year around . Of course these gardens always have plants waiting in the wings to replace ones that have proceed over . A larger garden enable you to have different surface area which are at their best at different time . But whatever the size of the garden it is a good idea to have something which is sensational in bloom at every season ; something so beautiful that looking at it makes your heart beat quicker . For me at the mo it is the gravel garden I made for my ever growing iris ingathering . I begin with flag years ago in a previous garden with some fancy iris ordered from France . They were brilliantly colorful and primped , ruffled and ruched , flounced and frilly like fancy up contestants for TOWIE and I was delighted with them . But then I discovered some modestly cloak irises produce in a corner of the garden and thought they made my French I look rather vulgar . I later find out that they were Benton irises bred by Cedric Morris and contribute to the previous proprietor , a nursery man who was a acquaintance of his . Now Benton irises are becoming very pop and this is thanks to Sarah Cooke who lives near here and has the National Collection of Benton irises which she has chase after down from all over the state and beyond . She has made them available to the public and many mass are falling for their lovely colours and reticulate flowers . This next one is ‘ Benton Deidre ’ .

My deary is ‘ Benton Olive ’ because it has such pernicious coloring .

‘ Benton Susan ’ is a endearing yellow-bellied colour .

‘ Benton Susan ’ is the female parent of my favourite iris child and the only one I have nominate . She is such a rich lily-livered color . I think she is even more beautiful than her female parent .

I am also rather proud of this benighted purple sister .

And this one in blue .

And I think this one is quite prominent .

Amongst the irises I raise the snowy whiteLibertia grandiflora .

At the far end of the gravel garden there is a spectacularAbutilon x suntense .

And on the other side of the track you may see the jaundiced pincer ofSophora teptapterawhich like the libertia comes from New Zealand .

And next to it there is the bushyMagnolia laevifolia‘Gail ’s Favourite ’ which has glossy light-green leaves and delightful flower which open up from brownish suede - like bud .

If you turn leave by the sophora you enter the undercover garden where at the moment the treillage is festooned with pinkish and white wisteria . But I will take you there another day . And very before long we will have roses everywhere and then I shall probably never come in from the garden at all .

I ca n’t envisage that your garden is ever anything but delicious . No garden lacks warts here or there but I ’ve no doubt that , were I to claver , I ’d be wander about oohing and ooh for hours , if not days . Your bearded Iris collection is lovely . My own is badly unimpressive . I ’ve fall upon that the handful that bloom reliably are all situate at the bottom of my neglected back slope , while those I ’ve open more attention flush randomly , if at all . I have n’t make up one’s mind if those on the back slope receive just the correct grade of wet , if the rootstock on the garden ’s main stage get inadequate sun exposure , or who do it what but they have me frustrated .

Well , I rather like the frillier iris , when I can find them . Mostly mine are the evident varieties set years ago as contrasting accents to paeony . Lately , May seems to the prime month for my English borders filled with paeony and roses , along with a few irises and endearing cloud of cat mint . Now that it ’s June , they already are ready for their first “ Chelsea chopper ” of the season after two days of fierce winds . Must have been a tempest out at ocean , I always say .
