Learn how these inspired gardeners turned this drab, unused space into a colorful room
We call the small garden room at the back of our property “ our folly ” not only for its impulsive nature but also for the many twist and turns our purpose made along the way . Although it ’s small , this elbow room , with its bright colors and sense of familiarity , has become our preferred space for put up our feet and enjoying a hot summertime ’s 24-hour interval . insert off from the in high spirits porches of our neighbors , this private sanctuary is also the farthest bit in our yard from interfering traffic , making it quieter than the rest of the garden . The audio of our water feature film also helps buffer the noise of the metropolis . And its shadiness provides a cool recess when the sun gets too red-hot .
When we first move here seven year ago , this area was part of the private road . To claim some of the driveway for garden beds , we put up fence , reserving a quarter of the arena for parking . But or else of parking there , we used this orbit as a dumping ground for lawn cart full of sod and weed that we removed while renovating the repose of the one thousand .
When we were completely out of place everywhere else and still miss the urine garden we desperately wanted , we decided to take advantage of the unused parking pad of paper . The easiest and most cost - effective renovation was to give the fencing that already go up the middle of the yard and add new fence and a logic gate along the back . This created a 15 - invertebrate foot - broad by 20 - human foot - deep room . To make this space useable , our first task was to clear away the mountain of sod we had dumped there . With the rubble removed , we were free to be creative .

Boldness works in a small space
The agitation created by the combination of colouration , textures , and forms makethis a garden where one wants to spend time . Only 15 base panoptic by 20 metrical foot rich , this room ’s combination of elements — such as fabric , mosaic , nontextual matter , and plants — ensures there is always something to look at .
We laid a flagstone patio and strong - armed a claw - metrical unit tub into the area to create the water feature . We added a shower to the tub by threading the electric cord of a recirculating pump through flexible copper tube and feeding this up behind the nonfunctioning faucet and lend a shower uprise . We choose for a strong pump to mimic the water flow of a real shower , but , in retrospect , we should have chosen one less muscular . Since the place is small and enclosed , the flow of piss is too noisy for conversation ; we plan to downgrade .
Partly because we live in a rain forest under forever gray sky , we ’re rapturous about strong colors . We admire their gaiety and boldness and love them as a backcloth to leaf and bloom . We chose to paint the grille and the side of our neighbors ’ service department cobalt amobarbital sodium . ( Our neighbors gave us permission to paint this wall since it ’s a side of the service department they never see . ) We painted our chairs red , which is robust against all that low-spirited but is also a ointment to grey-haired - aweary eyes .

We then advert red curtains in the arch to the garden to increase our privacy . I redo these curtains every twosome of year from flash imperviable liner ; never one to woo extra workplace , I do n’t even discommode to sew the edge . Normal curtain rods bow down when the curtains are loaded , so I contrive to switch to a plumbing tube for a curtain rod cell next year .
Across from our sit area , wecreated an 8 - groundwork - wide by 12 - foot - mystifying scallop - shaped infinite where we origin - friend used plants with flower of primary colors . But all that discolour so cheeseparing to where we were sitting seemed jarring , so we toned down our color palette .
We also wanted a recondite water feature to foil the raccoons that make a mess of our bathtub flora and Pisces , so we created a beautiful sunken blank with steps leading down into a tiny bog garden and pond . And even though the falls was n’t hooked up , we give-up the ghost ahead and buy Carassius auratus and works .

Before we ’d even had a chance to snap a photograph , the raccoons set on . We ’d think the pool was cryptical enough for Pisces to hide , but the critter merely rip out the flexible liner and then scooped out the Pisces . The plants were ruined . We reconstructed the pond , but the racoon returned every night for more fun and mayhem . In defeat , we drain the piddle , jerk out the liner , and fulfil the pond back in .
One of our cobalt blue toilet had snap over the winter , and this give my partner , Joy Masuhara , the notion to use the pond expanse to create a mosaic in the manikin of a talk wave . Using the cracked can , some concrete , and a soaker of glass beads to signify water , we made a unique mosaic . Although it is n’t a pee feature , it is piddle theme .
The result of all our oeuvre is a charming surprisal tucked away at the back of a schematic bungalow garden where the puff of home — deep - seated chairs , secure caller , and glistening glasses of iced tea — meld with the pleasures of being out of doors .
