Funky succulents.

It seems that succulents are trendy . I am appalled . I hate to be voguish . My grandmother was very fond of succulents and cacti . For years I always thought that they were erstwhile - fashioned , foul , pricky , fleshy or spiky matter . I love them now , but only after years of gardening . How issue forth all these young , trendy people have decided that they are fashionable ? I came to make out succulent with maturity , the same direction I acquired a taste for burnt umber , huitre , olive and dry white wine . And now they are in style and all over Pinterest . They are being used by interior designers and by people who have never tasted oyster , ( horticulturally speak ) . They are even creeping into marriage ceremony bouquets . It ’s as if the presenters of ‘ purely fare broil ’ ( or whatever it ’s called ; sorry , I do n’t have a telly , ) started quoting Proust . It ’s discombobulating . I ’ll just keep my heading down and wait for it to pass . Eventually they will move on to aspidistras or monkey puzzle trees and we succulent lovers will be able to enjoy our succulent without the awful contamination of trendiness .

Succulent cupcakes
My collecting which get down a few years ago with variegated agaves is now all out of control . I first fell for succulents when I get a line them grow at Tresco Abbey Gardens where they know outside in the meek climate . Here in East Anglia they have to subsist in pots .
Succulents . Beth Chatto ’s Nursery .
I took the above photo at Beth Chatto ’s baby’s room last yr . It is a nice sheltered corner but I do n’t cerebrate the breeze block are the best backcloth . I favor the room I saw them coif either side of the shed threshold at East Ruston Gardens in Norfolk last year .

They have even planted quite big ones out in the open air at East Ruston and I particularly like thisEcheveriaplanted in the copper can , it perfectly pit the jade green verdigris .

At Great Dixter succulent and cacti are planted , a little incongruously , in small beds on the Lutyens steps .

I rather liked this planter at Gravetye Manor last year .

Now it is nearly November I dare n’t risk go forth them out any longer . And so I have the annual headache of to trying to find way for them all . Every year , of course , the problem gets worse . This is the service program room mesa , the chef insist he necessitate it for food preparedness . That might be a bit slick . And I still have all these in the greenhouse , they will want to come in presently . They are all infant that my niece gave me in the outpouring . They are growing up tight . Actually , when it amount to succulents my addiction is quite mild compare to hers . She is the Succulent Queen . Where will it all stop ? Once the windowpane Belle Miriam Silverman are full I really do n’t know what I shall do . Thank goodness , it will before long be snowdrop time and I will be able to bury about succulents and begin indulging one of my other obsessions . Actually it has already start . Oh high-priced , you HAVE caught the hemipteran ! Believe it or not , my own compulsion with succulents only dates back to our move to our current home less than 7 days ago . I had a just a modest number of succulents in our former garden , planted in a narrow margin along the driveway , but as I recall that “ collection ” included all of 2 species . Now , I ’d be heavily - press to identify the genus in my ever - growing collection , much less number the number of species . However , they ’re easy plants here , made for our ever - warmer climate and circumscribed rainfall . Luckily , I do n’t have to tote anything in spite of appearance . But blogger admirer in the Pacific Northwest do just that every twelvemonth . If you have n’t already bet at Loree Bohl ’s danger garden web log , you may want to – her October 20th post goes into item regarding the length she perish to protect her babies ( and that ’s just one post of 4 on the topic ) .
Still giggling . give thanks you .
I like succulent . Like you , I acquired my appreciation for them after age of other case of horticulture . Succulents are a piddling knavish in partial sun , although there are varieties that do quite well . stale climates can make the tricky , too , although a few inhuman - hardy cactuses , sedum , and other succulents are native here in the Second Earl of Guilford , too . I appreciate your humour with this post – the nerve , that succulent could be considered voguish !

Excellent spot , thank you ! I ’m wary too of “ trendy ” , but also love succulent plants ( and coffee , olive and juiceless white wine-coloured ) . Unlike East Anglia , the climate here is almost perfect for them so no auspices ask – our 5 year drought devestated the snail and slug population so it will be a few years before that problem reappear .
I sleuth a beautiful Aloe on your utility tabular array – marlothii , ferox ?
Now sitting with a bountiful smile on my brass after say this , give thanks you . I definitely suppurate into wish succulent ( also avocados , mussel – never savour oysters or snails thank goodness ) ; I have just the one as my indoors is too shady for most plants but am lofty to say that my genus Crassula is still alive after nearly 2 years with me !

You have an impressive collection of succulents and I love the photograph you shared , particularly of the transcription at East Ruston Gardens . Like you , I was later to appreciate succulent and cacti . However , I still do n’t wish oysters . Perhaps the youngsters like succulent and cacti because they require picayune attention and can be ignored for the most part . Just last year , a few stores here started carry macrame plant hangers . Not as elaborated as the ones we used to make with beads and the like but still …
A mythical appeal Choris ! You have every right to monopolise the utility program room table . Next you will you will be telling us that you stratify seeds in the electric refrigerator 🙂 succulent are definitely in vogue just now and not just genuine life plants . I ’ve seen several menage item and ornamentation ( both indoors and outdoors ) influenced by them this year .
