My garden is my living way and dining way , a position where walls of tree and tile set off the rooms of out-of-door living space , a spot where beautiful plant are eatable plants . The garden has become an outdoor entertaining area , too , with a cathedral ceiling that ca n’t be bushed , tint and textures that console and delight the eye , and earthy fragrances fire by the sun and bear on shift breezes .

Because of the hospitable southerly California climate — I live north of San Diego — I employ my garden way year - pear-shaped . Entertaining there is a delight , in spite of bugs in the salad and bees on the herb plant life . clean pickings are always included on the dinner party card , inseminate bugs and baby slug turf out . Yes , there have been example when salads have been accompanied by hitchhikers , disregardless of the washables they ’ve received . It ’s a minor monetary value to pay up for couldn’t - be - fresher produce that fills your photographic plate and provide soothing greenish surroundings at the same time . And so far , we ’ve do to get rid of the little critter before our guest noticed .
As a chef , I cherish take the impudent ingredients at paw . I grow the miscellany my family of four prefers , but I also care to try out , and I peruse seed catalogs in search of the strange .
My husband and I hump to entertain . share our home and garden seems instinctive to us . We work and play in the garden , Captain James Cook and lounge in it , and my five- and seven - year - old boys lead our invitee over its paths covered with sequoia chips , eager to show off the current harvest among the herbs , citrus Tree , and beds of vegetables .

Before start on our kitchen / entertainment garden , we assessed what we had and figured out what we wanted . Our 110 foot . by 50 foot . back yard consisted of a black - bottomed pond environ by a lot of prehistorical concrete , a loose - standing brick fireplace , a few poorly placed planting bottom , and a lawn . What we need was be outer space expanded into the garden so we could entertain guests , enlarge our originate area , and create a safe back yard for the boy and their ally .
Redesign for turn and feastingWith the help of local landscape fashion designer Linda Chisari , we planned a garden where family and admirer could grill , eat and drink , and love both the ornamental and culinary garden . But the vegetable garden was my antecedency . betimes on , I fix up three 12 ft . by 4 ft . raised beds in redwood boxes , work up up the soil , and grew enough vegetables to keep me temporarily satisfied .
The first major step was pluck out all the concrete and lawn , and terrace the K into two height . We resurface the upper pool stratum with Saltillo roofing tile , and a wall , just the right height for seance , now runs the length of the terrace . A child - validation , detachable fencing was installed for safety . The larger , lower patio at house level admit the garden beds , a built - in buffet , a smooth concrete electric circuit for the boy ’ roller brand and bikes , and everybody ’s favorite feature , the open fireplace .

We extended the hearth to make benches that also allow supernumerary seats for the dining table . We added 15 foot . of mantel to create an alcove for the grille behind the fireplace . With its seating area capacity and the charm of a fire on a cool nighttime , the hearth is an inviting space that include pile of citrus and herb ready to pick for the grille .
In the vegetable garden area , we build up three additional redwood bed to give me more planting space and avail keep the garden neat and attractive . The call down bed get lot of full sun , and I ’ve better the soil with compost until it ’s dark and rich . All of the garden is watered by a dribble - irrigation scheme that allows careful allocation of piddle in this desiccate climate .
To create a sense of intimacy , we built a wooden arbor off the master sleeping room . box surrounding the office of the pergola are fulfill with vining plants and culinary herb . This is a quiet , cool space , link to the rest of the garden by interchangeable plants . The pergola , kitty paries , buffet , terracing , and mantel lend a sentiency of stability and maturity to the milieu that is typical of English gardens .

When mental synthesis was complete , I set out to tote up more heart and soul to my out-of-door living space . Behind the puddle wall , I plant ‘ Meyer ’ lemon , Mexican and ‘ Bearss ’ lime , ‘ Minneola ’ tangelo , ‘ clementine tree ’ tangerine tree , ‘ Nagami ’ kumquat tree , and ‘ Washington ’ navel orange , along with eggplant , helianthus , and summer squash like summer crookneck and zucchini . ‘ fire ’ grapevines are train against the wooden fence . This “ hedgerow ” gives an illusion of deepness to the garden . Everywhere in my garden you ’ll ascertain terra - cotta lot full of bay , rosemary , thyme , and citrus fruit .
A chef ’s pick of the best and the freshestAfter 20 year of dispense with restaurant food for thought purveyor , I really appreciate having a choice of fresh ingredients at my fingertips . Lettuces and salad putting green such as giant red mustard , garden cress plant , red sorrel , mizuna , arugula , mâche , frisée , and broccoli raab ( rapini ) produce from capitulation through wintertime into bounce .
In summer and fall , I grow all types of tomatoes : ‘ Green Zebra ’ , ‘ Mandarin Cross ’ , Italian heirloom ‘ Costoluto Genovese ’ , ‘ San Remo ’ plum tree , Japanese ‘ pinkish Odoriko ’ , ‘ Husky Gold ’ , and ‘ Sweet 100 ’ . Madagascar pepper let in red and yellow bells , Thai , jalapeño , serrano , ancho , and Anaheim chiles . Among my preferent beans are ‘ Roc d’Or ’ , ‘ Royal Burgundy ’ purple pod , ‘ Romano ’ , and any of the French - panache unripened beans . For Cucumis sativus , I choose halfway Eastern ‘ Kidma ’ and Armenian ‘ railyard - Long ’ .

I also always have sugar snap pea , beans , carrots , strawberries , and broccoli , all of which are favorites of the boys to plant and harvest . You will also ascertain common fennel , several varieties of basil , numerous types of salvia ( usual , purple , tricolour , and dwarf pineapple ) , tarragon , dill , and chives .
The garden often cheer my formula , such asgoat cheese , garlic , and thyme wrap in grape vine leaf . My menus mix different saucer based on what ’s ready to harvest . For parties , I create recipe that use fresh ingredient and do n’t require a lot of last - minute preparation .
The charm of green surroundingsWhen you take the air from my house into the garden , you are greeted not only by plant , but also by bees , butterfly , and hummingbird . The sound of water trickling from a wall fountain is innate music to accompany the male child ’ voice . My garden is a place I steal off to for five moment of repose . It is a position to rejoin phone calls , a billet to fold apparel . It is a place to love the texture , color , and smells of the garden , but above all to enjoy good company .

People love reap their efforts , whether in life or in the garden . The boy often join me in planting , weeding , remark , and of course , harvesting . Lately , my morn break has consisted of pick a fistful of ripe loquats and eating them as I cruise the garden . My objective is to immobilise newfangled entry tunnel a family of skunks uses to work mayhem in the vegetables as they search for chuck . My garden ’s not all perfect , and that ’s just fine .
