Narcissus Minor ‘Cedric Morris’ is in Bloom!
Narcissus Minor Cedric Morris ( Sorry it ’s a bit out of direction , it is very windy today )
The smashing wintertime delight in my garden isNarcissus minor‘Cedric Morris ’ . This piffling treasure is only 25 centimetres tall and I have been waitress apprehensively for the bud to open . If you are thinking that this is a little early , it is in reality slightly subsequently than usual . I do n’t know why , it has n’t been very cold . The blossom are often open for Christmas and they last for ages , sometimes until March and they seem imperviable to bad weather condition . It is by far the earliest daffodil in the garden ; to begin with even than Rijnveld ’s Early Sensation which gets going subsequently this month . A frosty dawning may get hold the flowers lie down face down attend a piece sad but they always pick up up again . They are undimmed xanthous with emerald green shading towards the radical and endearing frilled edges . This absolutely formed miniature daffodil is unmanageable to regain . Beth Chatto sells it but you have to order it early in the year . If you find the right billet for it the bulbs will increase . They clump up nicely although they do n’t seem to gear up cum . It does seem to suffer from narcissus aviate though and may suddenly evaporate . I had a wonderful clustering which had gradually increased over the years and the whole lot disappeared one twelvemonth and I had to start again . I cerebrate this must have been narcissus pilot . Now I am always heedful not to plant it in full sun . It needs the protection of other plants so that these pests ca n’t sniff it out . It want salutary drain and plenty of hommos . Slugs be intimate it and there is nothing more heart breaking than to find the buds you have been watch for days manducate off . It is deserving any effort to please it though .
You probably know the tale . A friend of Cedric Morris , Basil Leng launch it growing on a rocky ledge in Spain more than fifty eld ago . He was a keen gardener with an awe-inspiring garden in the South of France where he grew tree peonies and strange bulbs . He was drive along the due north seacoast of Spain one cold wintertime ’s day when he espy a glob of this on a outrageous cant near a railway viaduct tight to the fishing village of Luarca . He stopped the car and endeavor to reach it by standing on the roof of his car . A girl who was passing saw what he was trying to do and being more athletic than he was grapple to reach the daffodils . Basil Leng ’s story is that when she hear to find fault him a Narcissus pseudonarcissus the whole clump , fifty bulb get along out , showering the machine with bulbs and stones . He took the band . And from those 50 bulbs all our stock is descended . As far as I know , no one has found it arise round there since . From today ’s perspective it seems an human activity of quite appalling vandalism to grub out the whole thumping of a rare plant but people never seemed to bother about this sort of affair then . It is extraordinary that people reckon themselves quite at indecorum to travel the populace and pillage other countries ’ flora . I am thankful Basil Leng did collect it though ; wintertime would n’t be the same without this small treasure to cheer us through the darkest twenty-four hour period .

Cedric Morris gave Beth Chatto one bulb which she pass around She tell apart the tale of giving Sir Cedric a potful of this adorable narcissus for his ninetieth natal day because his clump had become flat out . After his death Beth enquire Leng ’s permission to call it ‘ Cedric Morris ’ . It is quite expensive but conceive me , it is worth every penny . I would screw to hear if anyone else grows this narcissus and if yours is in bloom yet .

What an keen little dish Chloris . This narcissus has been on my compliments list for quite some clock time but have never organised myself to ordain one . Will have to mark the Beth Chatto website now . I do have galanthus ‘ Cedric ’s Prolific ” but it ’s not in flower yet .
This is a new one to me , but something blooming would certainly be a welcome flock about now . I will be on the lookout .
