A unique setting makes for a stunning backdrop to this English-inspired garden
Hi GPODers !
I ’m so pleased with the multifariousness in gardens we are able to showcase on the blog this week ! After starting the week with spring blooms in Pennsylvania ( Spring Blooms in Rhonda ’s Pennsylvania Garden ) and traveling down to Arizona to check out out a spring kitchen garden ( Dawn ’s Spring Garden in Arizona ) , we enjoyed autumn in Buenos Aires yesterday ( Ezequiel ’s Autumn in Buenos Aires ) . Today we ’re back in the northeastward to see fabulous cottage garden flowers with a city skyline backcloth . This is the cap deck of cards garden of Natalie King in the South End of Boston .
I ’m an home decorator in Boston , and I come from contemporaries of women who have loved industrial plant and nurtured garden throughout their biography . This is a small garden on my urban center roof pack of cards , with a pallette revolutionise by the drama and naturalistic quality of English gardens . My kinsperson treat the garden as an extension of a way in our rest home , and it brings so much beauty into our life each season .

In a low space , like a balcony or roof pack of cards , I like to blend formal and informal elements , such as a wrought iron board top with a humble terracotta passel , spilling over with herb and prime . Along a balcony edge , an herbaceous border style of planting soften an urban landscape painting , with the dramatic comportment ofdelphiniumscreating superlative and structure , dotted with the graceful bell - shaped blooms of foxglove , wispy lavender , and a climbing get up or two . I like to plan for fall as this is the time of day that the garden is most enjoyed , and so , I select a color palette that looks dramatic and refined in the early evening , such as rosy purple of the foxglove , purple blue of the delphinium , lilac-colored , soft garden pink of a climbing rose ( creating a spectacular eve scent ) and shades of green herb , some that I let go to flower like slew , to enhance the fragrance and the naturalistic timber of it all .
A H2O feature film create ambiance , sending a stillness to the city noise , and can be ‘ elderly ’ with small pots planted with moss and lavender surrounding . A belittled fountain , birdbath or even a pocket-sized bowl with river rock ‘n’ roll and water system , will make a haven for birds and bee on hot afternoons . These element combine , ranging in tonus from a humble kitchen garden , to the drama of a ascend rambling along a balcony - edge , dripping in blooms , give a good sense of space that feels so welcoming . There ’s an ingredient of creating a garden where the odds are against you ( up flight of stairs , in the wind , on a small balcony or roof deck ) that has a degree of rebelliousness about it , where you ’re doing something that ’s not loose , but you ’re doing it because of the love of it , and I imagine that makes each bloom or herb even more precious . It ’s the ultimate sumptuosity to edit out a sweetness of roses for yourself , that you ’ve rear , and will in turn will raise you back with sweetness and beauty throughout your home .
Herbs in this garden include : mint , basil , Petroselinum crispum , cilantro , rosemary , oregano along with bounce onion plant . The more that you cut , the more that grow . you may set big groups of cuttings in jar with 1″ of water supply in the fridge , and it create the most beautiful scent when contemplating what to cook for dinner .

City or small blank horticulture is always about locomote with what inspires you more - so than pick out smaller or more typical planting often seen . I ’m inspired by ambiance , and the simplest room to create an elegant arrangement is a single bow of delphinium in a small bud vase on a bedside or kitchen countertop , where the acme and drama infuses the space in the beauty and inspiration of nature .
Despite Natalie ’s rooftop location , she is able to create a plushy fit with the help of various containers . Larger trough conciliate larger planting , and a molded iron table act as a pretty pedestal for pocket-size spate to get some lift .
steeple of flower , like these delphinium ( Delphinium elatum , Zones 2–7 ) also put in a stack of varied height interest that is quintessential in English cottage conception .

A close look at those incredible delphinium blooms .
What Natalie loses in gardening distance , she stupefy back with the Boston apparent horizon that make for an interesting and unique backdrop for all of her plantings . Her garden is a true light-green haven amongst the difficult line and concrete that fence in .
Natalie ’s spire of blooms somehow become even more vibrant at dusk . Towards the back , delphinium get hold of up toward the crescent moonshine , and the lavender - pink blooms of a woodland sage ( Salvia nemorosa , Zones 4–8 ) in the foreground gleaming against their benighted shank .

But salvia is absolutely still delicious in the sun .
And one last snapshot of this cozy quad at sundown , with the skyscraper starting to illuminate . While you wo n’t be able to enjoy the sound of nature in this garden , you’re able to enjoy the architecture of the city and listen to the night voice without induce to deal with the fuss and bustle below .
give thanks you so much for sharing these beautiful photos of your spectacular blank , Natalie ! It ’s well-off to see your fashion designer ’s optic on this place , and you ’ve provided endless brainchild for those who do not have traditional gardens .
