The following story of gardening success and unsuccessful person was sent to me by Peter Birch . For those of you just getting started or who call for a little encouragement , Peter ’s story should run into the spot . -DTG
Introduction
It ’s February , 2019 . Almost a class since I plant my first edible plants in my backyard . I ca n’t remember when on the button I decided I was going to farm some edible plant . It would have been some time in 2017 that I really committed to it . That ’s when I go preparing the first garden bed . I also ca n’t think exactly when the interest began , but I ’ve been dabbling in ‘ eldritch ’ composting for a few years . The interest came from a act of thing that I had been considering for a while . Things like :
These thoughts get me concerned in alternate ways of producing food , which lead me to permaculture and place - develop food . I really liked the idea of permaculture and food forest garden pattern . When I in the end committed to starting an edible garden , I wanted it to be a food timber .
The main objective of my first garden was to test my own commitment and to ( hopefully ) show my wife that it would n’t ruin our backyard . To do this , it require to be low and reversible . I desire to apply layer of plants , mostly repeated , with a mixture of edibles and beneficials . Herbicides and pesticide were not to be used .

4th of June , 2018 . The Moringa , Mandarin , Acerola and Agave ( it had to go somewhere ) among the Cow Peas . The trees were plant in other May . The mulch is Palm frond , Mango leaves and Lilly Pilly prunings . The city has imposed grievous water restrictions .
reckon back over my first class , my commitment to growing food has remained secure . I have had some success and I have revel it more than I expected . My original motivations stay , though my eagerness to develop a mini food forest and focalize on perennials has belittle , a turn . With the small amount of land I am working with , I now think it is necessary to include some other horticulture methods as well to make the most of the space .
Herbicides and pesticides ? I stand poisoning the aphids on my beans and the leaf miners that round my Mandarin tree diagram and I ’ve used only mechanically skillful means ( squishing ) to battle the grasshoppers that wipe out my Sweet Potato plant . But , this very night that I ’m writing these words , I used Pest Oil to defend my Chilli bush from the White Fly that were sapping its strength just as product is peaking . I ’ll retrieve a direction to justify that to myself .

Plants I’ve Tried
The clime here is coastal , dry tropical . There is a lot of rainfall but it is mostly in the summertime , go away the respite of the year sunny . Annual evaporation is more than twice the annual rainfall . I ’ve tried to select plants with this in mind .

Things I’ve Done Badly
Some of the thing list here really were dumb . Others were just things that could have been better or measured experiments that did n’t go well . All part of the learning process .
Things I’ve Done Well
There have been a figure of things I ’ve done that I think , at this stage , are good . Maybe with more knowledge and experience I ’ll exchange my brain on some of them , but for now , these are my successes .
Future Things
These are things that are in progress or on my radar . Everything in this list is doable . There are other half - bake ideas that are n’t on newspaper publisher .
Where to now ? I ’m ready to call my tryout garden a succeeder but , other than the list above , I have n’t figured out what to do next . Will there be more garden beds ? More fruit tree ? I hope so , but I ’m not sure what or where yet .
When you are n’t sure about how to garden , what to grow , where to grow it , etc . , Peter ’s plan of attack is a great model and one I heartily plump for . Jump in , plant a lot of things , then learn and take notes on what work and what does n’t . You will have succeeder and failures that will teach you . reward successes and discard the failure . Look at what a beautiful garden he created despite water restrictions , miserable drain and lots of experimentation ! Lose your fear , clean a spot , initiate planting , then you will find succeeder and the rattling sense of satisfaction that comes from growing some of your own intellectual nourishment . Thank you , Peter , for deal your story . I ca n’t wait to see what you grow next . -DTG
