Starting a new garden is both exciting and daunting . This one commence with a big green goddess lawn and a few tree diagram . Garden Photos Year By Year

It all start with a pitiful look patch of grass , a shed , a few trees , and an old swimming pond .

get along froma small urban center garden where I had planted every square in , I was glad to have a lot more infinite but , wow , it was restrain to start clean . I think it ’s a bit harder the more you know about flora and gardening .

A small space is much easier and less expensive to contend . And the thought of how many plants — and how much time — it would take to fill this new space seemed impossible . Especially as a frugal nurseryman .

So , not quite sure of where thing were headed , I started digging .

Year One

I think exactly what I was thinking when I adopt this first photo .

1 ) I have no mind how to get start .

2 ) I really missmy old garden .

I expect to miss multitude and places when we make a motion away from our honest-to-god home base , but I really was n’t expected to mourn for the garden .

In hindsight , though , it gave me so much experience and happiness and a blank space to see solace — how I could I not ?

Year Two

A chic nurseryman will not make beds unless there are plants ready to go in them . And then there is me . I really needed the layout in front of me to guide my decisions .

I mapped out some in - ground bed and added a few boxes for that class ’s veg garden . I just so badly wanted things to be growing . And they could be moved later .

I also bulge out think aboutthemes for the garden — ways to reduplicate elements that would gradually bring things together .

The caducous and old swimming pool are eyesores , for certain . The pool came with the house and we enjoyed it except for the fact that it was built in the nicety ( inhuman pee ! ) under pine tree diagram ( that constantly drop their needle ) .

So , what do you come up when excavate sandy soil?Nothing !

In all the years I ’ve been digging this curtilage , I ’ve only ever constitute this dolly ’s foot and a few Harlan Fisk Stone at most . ( Updated later : It took 10 yr to see my first earthworm here ! )

Progress ! At this tip I ’ve tally a few fruit Tree , container plants , and some perennial . I was also madly starting everything I could from seed .

Year Three

The very canonic shape I had in mind when I set forth the garden is beginning to appear . I wanted the view from the back terrace to have the wow factor . It ’s not there yet , but I see the os in blank space .

There ’s a small pond on the right side . The shed and swimming pool are still as ugly as ever . The time it call for to keep it clean is not worth having it .

True Confession : I do n’t witness many people who empathise this , but I love wintertime more than any other time of year .

More specifically , winter with snow . It may be because I pass my childhood wintertime playing outdoors from sunrise to sundown . I find it so calm and beautiful .

Year Four

After a few eld you start to make love who the main histrion will be — which industrial plant will thrive and which I will struggle .

In this grime , daisies , bee balm(Monarda ) and coneflower ( Echinacea ) propagate like crazy . It ’s a blessing and a bane .

One my daughters chose the blue color for the caducous door . It ’s calledJazz Blue(Glidden Jazz 30BB 10/337 ) . It has since become a idea color throughout the place .

Year Five

This picture was on a very uncommon day when I had cut the grass , trimmed edges , and use fresh mulch . It ’s so orderly I can not believe it ’s my garden . It ’s the wedding Clarence Shepard Day Jr. tantamount of a garden .

Some citizenry see it and say I must pass all my metre tending it .

But really , no . I probably spend an hour at most each workweek , on top of cutting the grass as needed .

The sleep of my free sentence is spent taking photos and range around aimlessly . Watching birds and worm . Just being there . And making thing . I ’d rather build stuff than pull weeds .

The border looks reasonably in this next photo but that was abruptly - lived . The plants did not wish the ground — perhaps it was a load of bad ( composted ) manure — and most had to be moved the next spring . This was a big setback for the garden . I ’ll never know if it was sully manure . I just know a whole belt of plants skin .

You may notice the board over the little pond in the next photo . I do that to give my Pisces a place to hide from cats and birds .

At this point I ’m still fancy out the plants . It ’s a happy topsy-turvy mess . A few works are arise path too eminent , blocking out others , so I divide and transplant , mostly in recent spring when they ’re low .

Gardening is always a work in progress . All journeying , no destination : just a few rest period post along the way .

Year Six

This was a gravid year for change . See the pond on the leftover side ( below)?I build that by myself using a kit .

Which remind me of the only good affair I have to say about sandy filth : you may dig a whole pool by hand in a day .

At my previous garden ( clay soil ) it would have taken several sidereal day and mayhap weeks . There were section of my former garden where I could n’t get the power shovel in the solid ground at all .

But I ’d still choose clay over guts . This sand is not fun . Lots of the perennial have one good season and vanish over the winter , never to be seen again .

On a bright , artful note , the shed got top with agiant bird nest and ball . Funny enough , birds bed to sit on those eggs . I lovegiant over - sized upcycled garden graphics .

Some flowers like bee balm ( Monarda ) are proving to be really aggressive . I care how they make full the place except they also choke out other more civil plants .

The area around the ladder is hummingbird primal . The whole garden has become wildlife central .

Year Seven

While the garden looks rather casual , one thing I am obsessed with is plant combination . I wish to position plant so they show each other off with their contrasting colors and textures .

My flower - mania extend to the mini greenhouse cap this yr .

I used sturdyhanging shoe bags as planters . I normally would n’t splurge on annual but we find several flats for $ 6 each so I could not refuse .

Tucked off throughout the yard are countless vegetables and fruit . I like to grow them in pots so I can move them around as demand . I always grow more than I require and give the surplus to neighbour .

This is another favorite wintertime photo .

I just really love coke and I can cope with cold much better than the extreme heat and humidness we get in the summertime .

Year Eight

Here ’s a confession . I do not like yellow flowers ( or the colour yellow in general ) . They look fine ( to me ) in the photo ( below ) but in material life ? Yuck .

The class this was taken , I begin relocate anything yellowed to the back of the yard . The gamey nook for unsavory blooms !

The yellow were gravely step in with my love of bolshy , pinks , and oranges and how they play together .

Each 24-hour interval when I wake up up I take a look at the garden and usually snap a photo .

See the bare reason in the next exposure where the lawn has been slay ?

That happened one spring twenty-four hours after I involve my dawning photo and got it in my head that a big spiral of grass would be nerveless there . And , it would provide more planting blank .

Again , the only serious thing about rotten sandy soil is how easy it is to dig .

I should also mention that one of the most spectacular affair about insensate climate gardening is the demarcation from outflow to summer . It will never quit to stupefy me how the garden goes from bare to brazen in just a matter of week .

Year Nine

rose wine campion is another belligerent industrial plant in this grit . I love it but it reseed like its pants are on fire .

It ’s nearly out of the question to transplant well so I end up just tossing it in the thou waste galvanic pile , letting it reincarnate there .

Lots of plants can not handle this land , despite my best attempt to amend it each year , and they just die or disappear .

In fact , I pulled out so many works this class that next summer will be a unused start .
