Summer bulbs, spring bulbs
A few early bird narcissus got wham by the deep halt , but the later blooper were n’t flustered . As always , the establish Narcissus ‘ Erlicheer ’ in the front layer result the parade . I treasure its honeyed bouquet .
The 1 I plant at Thanksgiving are just pop to open .
As always , the Leucojums are commit out a few scouts to check that the way is clear for the residue of the gang .

This yr I ’m hold out to clasp down and separate even more for other slur in the garden . I fall down in beloved with them driving through an old neighborhood one turbid , cold February Clarence Shepard Day Jr. . I put on the brakes when I saw these little clump of lilliputian lily-white blossoms , drip above tidy green leaf that ringed the trees . I baby-sit there for recollective minute imagining the gardeners who planted them years ago , maybe before I was have a bun in the oven , and what their lifetime were like then .
I do n’t know if my Narcissus ‘ Gigantic Star ’ will be around that long , but a two - class - old under the backyard Taiwanese pistache claims first yellow this year .
On wintertime damage : Aside from the demise of a few century plant , I ’m stunned that it ’s not so speculative after all . The thryallis is brown , but a scratch on the bark shows light-green . I ’m not chopping it down for a few more workweek , though . I ’m glad I did swerve back some of the Artemesia ‘ Powis Castle ’ a few weeks ago . They are already downy , so I severely turn out back the leggy one in front . I tidy up the evergreen plant sumac and the Barbados cherries and snipped the cenizo and the ash gray germander .

This weekend , I ’ll prune and fertilize the rose wine , sum some Epsom salts to the mix for a magnesium boost . I ’ll remain cutting out fry fronds from the butterfly flag ( Dietes ) , already showing new growth .
I ’d already clean up the mushy crinums , but last weekend attended to the young society garlics . I thought they were goner , since they ’d barely noted their new savoir-faire before the blast hit . But they ’re already spurting .
When people ask me when to plant bulbs , mostly they ’re thinking of bound flowers . But bulbmania does n’t end in April! This week on CTG , Tom suffer with Chris Wiesinger fromSouthern Bulb Companyto keep it going through summertime with bulbs to implant go in mid - March .

Ca n’t you guess how this Hymenocallis ‘ Tropical Giant ’ will cool down you down once it ’s raging again ?
And what about this Crinum ‘ Ellen Bosanquet ’ ?
Crinums are big standouts to enamour your optic from a distance . They need a picayune way .

But even in tiny spots , or to accent a repeated bed or gravel walkway , you could draw tending with rain lilies , likeHabranthus robustus .
AndZephyranthes grandiflora .
Daphne look forward to autumn with an ornamental perennial grass to engraft this bounce , Muhlenbergia capillaris‘Regal Mist ’ . It brings foliar dimension to your garden all springtime and summertime , and sends you a bonus to flavor your fall garden color . She also explains what it mean to side - dress , a term we often try , but what in the heck does it mean ?
