The coastal mountains around here are famous for their huge internet of tramp trails .

The trails around the Cinque Terre are the most famous , but there are one C of others , let in a bunch right near our place in Rapallo .   Most of these trails are the old footpath that multitude used for transportation back in the previous day .

The steep track cheeseparing to our home leads up and over the pile to the home vale love locally as the “ entroterra , ” which just mean inland .

Up until a generation or two ago , this trail was the main highway between the coast and the interior valleys , and the farmers who lived in the entroterra would cart their products up and over the mountain to get to the market in Rapallo .

These days the upgrade takes about three or four minute for a one - way trip .   I ’ve heard chronicle of entroterra families who would ship their children into town to sell a XII eggs .   By my calculations , that ’s about an eight hr one shot head trip .   Boy are we spoiled these day .

One of our favorite hiking trails is the one that go up to the top of the foreland above the super - chic township of Portofino .   The purview are heavy , the forests are marvelous , and there are a number of surprise to discover among the dense growth , including a whole bunch of old water wheels and stone buildings that used to be water system powered John Mill .

People used boat to get here and then climbed up the batch to one of the Mill so as to craunch their grain into flour .   At one clip there were something like fifty mills on this fiddling deal , because there are a passel of fast moving short Creek here .

One of the surprise blot out in the brush is a small concrete dam that someone built years ago on one of the little Creek .   The dike is solid and still hold urine , so there is a good sized pond behind the dam .

The first time we discovered the decameter the water was full of brightly colored fish . A nigh review divulge that they were all young koi , maybe three hundred in all !   Unfortunately , I did n’t have my tv camera .

subsequently that summer , we returned and saw that sea gull and herons had eaten almost all of the little Pisces the Fishes , but we also noticed the two magnanimous koi that must be the parents .   Over the years we ’ve returned a number of times , and some springs there have been a few young koi again , but never anything like that first amazing scene .

photograph the big koi is unmanageable , because it ’s impossible to get down to the H2O except by get through a cloudy overgrown raft to get down there .   The two heavy koi , almost three feet long , are also fairly shy , and disappear whenever I do cringe down there .

Nonetheless , the pond is still a witching place , and we enjoy remove friends up there to show them the wild koi .   It ’s a long raise to get up there , but nowhere virtually as daunting as the prospect of boost up and over the mountain and back just to sell a dozen egg .
