David Besozzi   lives and garden in Glenville , NY .

“ start back in 2007 , I found myself in need of somelandscapingafter complete the construction of a unexampled garage . I did not allocate any funds for landscaping in my initial budget , and so , with awheelbarrowand a shovel I began what has become my Falco subbuteo and passionateness .

In the start , I opted to go with a Nipponese style garden , one that mime a karesansui — a rock or Zen garden . Although the central characteristic of the garden would be a juiceless stream seam , the topography of the chiliad dictated that the edges of the garden would slope or maltreat in towards the dry stream seam . I then imbed a potpourri of plant along these edges .

Over the twelvemonth I have experiment with unlike industrial plant . The garden has become more umbrageous over time , hence the use of more shadowiness tolerant plants as clock time has go on . Plantings include numerous sort ofhostas , Nipponese forest Mary Jane , junipers , clumping bamboo , astilbe , corabell , and much more . A dwarf Nipponese maple acts as a focus point near the sum of the garden .

Additionally , there are some severallanternsthroughout the garden : a short yukimi lantern , mioshi post lantern , tachidoro pedestal lantern . There is also a Buddha statue that anchors the far terminal of the garden , and a Gaunyin statue that stare towards Buddha from the other end . I also fenced in the garden and constructed a series gates , a lunation windowpane , and a sukashigaki style “ see through fencing . ”

Over time the garden has continued to produce in size . A kaiyu - shiki - teien style , orstroll gardenhas developed along the far side of my garage . This area was once used to park a camper but is now slow grow into a natural enlargement of the garden .

Over the age , the garden has become crucial to me in many ways . First it fulfilled a need to embellish my place . More significantly , it has come to sustain my love of horticulture , a beloved that I admittedly did not hold prior to 2007 . It ’s evidence of the power that nature can have over the human condition . In fact , as a result of these enterprise , I make up one’s mind to name the garden , Songni Yuan . Translation : Pine Mud ’s garden . Pine Mud has long been my Chinese name ( given to me while study Chinese in college ) . What could be more appropriate .

To come up out more and read the account of the garden and all its plants and features ( as well as my visits to other Japanese gardens ) , check out the garden web log I maintain ( fundamentally a garden diary):My Zen Garden .

By the path , I have met Stan Hobbs ( another subject highlighted on the GPODhere ) and visit his garden . We both live in the same township — unusual that there would be two very nice Japanese stylus garden in such a belittled place . ”
